We are inviting developers of all skill levels to join the Global Day of Coderetreat in Sheffield.
Spend the afternoon perfecting your developer skills in this global craftsmanship event, organised locally by epiGenesys and facilitated by University of Sheffield student Tom Crayford. We'll be pair programming (bring your laptop with your favourite development environment!) and sharing our learnings with other retreats around the world via video calls.
A coderetreat is a day long programming session based around a simple coding challenge. Developers of different skill levels are invited to engage in deliberate practice as equals. The goal is to learn, teach and improve with fellow software developers in a non-competitive setting. Find out more at http://coderetreat.org.
The event will also include our always popular Coderetreat Raffle - nobody will leave empty handed!
If you are looking to improve your software development skills and network with people in your industry then please come along and embrace the challenge.
How does it work?
The challenge is to implement Conway's Game of Life using a test-driven approach in whatever programming language you choose. Pairs will work together in 45 minute iterations. At the end of each iteration one person swaps with another pair and all code is deleted. The new pair then try to make a better solution based on their experiences.
What you'll need, what we'll provide:
You'll need to provide your own laptop with your favourite development environment(s). If you don't have a laptop then you should be able to pair with someone who does on the day. Many people find that bringing external keyboards and mice can make it easier to work in a pair. A notepad and pen might also be handy.
We'll provide power, wireless internet access and some lunch around 2pm.
